Recipe converter

Paste a recipe that uses grams. Every line we recognise gets a cup equivalent; anything we don't recognise comes back exactly as you wrote it, so nothing goes missing.

Not recognised

We don't have these ingredients yet, so they were left alone.

What it understands

Weights written as 250g, 250 g, 250 grams or 1 kg, plus ounces and pounds. Fractions like 1 1/2 and ½ work too.

It also reads measuring technique. Write sifted or packed and the conversion uses that density instead of the default — 100 g of sifted flour is a different number of cups from 100 g scooped straight from the bag.

How it works

No guessing and no AI. Each line goes through the same five steps, and every one of them is something you could do by hand with the charts on this site.

  1. Tidy the line. Bullets, numbering and notes in brackets are set aside so they cannot confuse the reading.
  2. Find the quantity. Whole numbers, decimals, mixed fractions and the single-character ½ and ¼ all count.
  3. Find the unit. Grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds, written long or short.
  4. Identify the ingredient. Names and their aliases are matched longest-first, so "whole wheat flour" never quietly becomes plain flour.
  5. Convert it. Using that ingredient's own density, and the technique named on the line if there is one.

A line that fails any of those steps is returned exactly as you typed it, with a note saying why. Silently dropping a line would be the one unforgivable bug in a tool like this — you would be missing an ingredient and have no way of knowing.

What it will not do

  • Resize the recipe. That is the recipe scaler, which halves or doubles quantities and leaves times and temperatures alone.
  • Convert eggs, tins or bunches. Counted things have no density, so they come back untouched — which is the correct answer.
  • Invent an ingredient it does not hold. If it is not in the GramsIntoCup catalogue, the line is returned as written rather than converted against something approximate.
  • Touch your method. Only ingredient lines are rewritten. Instructions pass through as they are.
